ASCENDR Fellowship

Immersing graduate students in defense-aligned research, mentorship, and career development.
The ASCENDR Fellowship is a one-year, cohort-based fellowship that prepares emerging scientists and engineers for careers aligned with the national security agenda through defense-relevant research experiences and professional development. Designed for STEM doctoral students at HSRU Alliance institutions, the program provides a structured experience that combines faculty-mentored research with immersive learning focused on the strategic, organizational, and technical dimensions of the defense research enterprise.

Fellows conduct research at their home institutions under the guidance of a faculty mentor and participate in a curated sequence of professional development activities. These activities are organized around core thematic pillars that introduce fellows to the defense innovation ecosystem, national security challenges, and career pathways within the Department of Defense (DoD) science and technology enterprise.

Through this integrated model, the ASCENDR Fellowship will build a national network of early-career researchers equipped with the knowledge, skills, and relationships needed to navigate and contribute to the defense research landscape. The program strengthens the talent pool for national security careers while fostering institutional capacity for defense-aligned research and mentorship.

This program is ideal for students nearing dissertation phase (Y3-Y4) who are conducting research that aligns with the department of defense research agenda and who would benefit from a dedicated year to deepen their research, expand professional development, and strengthen networks that support long-term career success.
