HSRU Alliance Launches Inaugural Postdoctoral Fellowship Program to Advance Equity and Research Excellence
EL PASO, TEXAS — The Alliance of Hispanic Serving Research Universities (HSRU) is proud to announce the launch of its inaugural Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, welcoming a cohort of 31 fellows from 15 HSRU member institutions. This ground breaking initiative represents a key step in the Alliance’s mission to expand pathways to the professoriate, deepen research impact, and foster innovation across the nation’s top Hispanic-serving Serving Institutions.

As the first coordinated postdoctoral program of its kind among R1-HSIs, the fellowship is built around a cohort model that emphasizes collaboration, mentorship, and leadership development. Over the course of the year, fellows will engage in webinars, site visits to Alliance institutions, and immersive learning focused on the HSRU Alliance’s four core pillars: research excellence, inclusive teaching, community engagement, and career development.

“This initiative is a testament to what is possible when institutions come together around a shared mission,”
said Cindy Larive, Chair of the HSRU Alliance. “We are not just expanding access—we are reshaping the future of academia by investing in emerging scholars whose work will strengthen both our institutions and the nation’s scientific enterprise.”

The Alliance comprises R1 universities that are federally designated Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). As a network, the Alliance is uniquely positioned to address national challenges by fostering research innovation and nurturing the next generation of diverse talent.

“The Postdoctoral Fellowship Program exemplifies the Alliance’s core belief that we are stronger together,”
said Azuri Gonzalez, Executive Director of the HSRU Alliance. “By leveraging our collective strengths, we’re building scalable, research-based models that support both individual scholars and institutional transformation.”

Fellows will have access to a robust support system, including mentorship from senior faculty, a community of peer scholars, and engagement with public and private partners committed to inclusive excellence in research. The program also creates a unique platform to share data, measure impact, and amplify effective strategies across institutions.

“We’re thrilled to welcome this remarkable inaugural cohort,” said James Holloway, Postdoctoral Program Chair. “Each fellow brings a depth of insight and commitment that will enrich our campuses and broaden the path to academic leadership.”

This inaugural fellowship represents a key step in the Alliance’s ongoing efforts to strengthen academic pathways and foster a more collaborative research environment across R1-HSIs. Through shared resources and a unified commitment to scholarly excellence, the program supports postdoctoral scholars who will help shape the future of higher education.
